Organized by
Palais Galliera with the support of the House of Balenciaga in tribute to the master of fashion (1895-1972) and to
mark the fortieth anniversary of his death, this exhibition unveils an
exceptional collection. The show features more than
seventy costumes and items of clothing of the 18th, 19th, and 20th
centuries alongside some forty haute couture coats
and dresses designed by Balenciaga between 1937 and 1968.
The couturier’s
collaborator, Fernando Martinez Herreros, donated the collection to the
Galliera seven years after Balenciaga’s death in 1972.
The show is
divided into six sections, each examining a specific type of garment that
Balenciaga collected and drew inspiration from: collars, coats, and capes; lace;
folklore and regionalism; historic ism; geometric forms; and monastic robes.
If in Paris don't miss this exhibition who is paired with a second one : Comme des Garcons SS 2012 collection “White drama” and will be the subject of my next blog.
